These local dialects, which are spoken in the rice-farming settlements and fishing villages in which the bulk of the Malay population lives, are everywhere giving ground to standard Malay as a result of the spread of formal education, the influence of the radio, increased opportunities for occupational and social mobility, and the growing involvement if rural Malays in state and national affairs.
