hoped to give in it a tolerably full picture of life in modern Malaya. Readers
not familiar with the Malay tongue should note that the first "a" of
the word "Tanah" is accented and pronounced like the "a" in
"father", while the secobd "a" in the word
"Malayu" is pronounced as if the word were written
